Soy reduces sperm count: study

WASHINGTON (AFP) - - Eating or drinking a lot of products containing soy and isoflavones can result in reduced sperm count among men, a Harvard School of Public Health study has shown.

"There has been a lot of interest on whether soy affects fertility because many studies in animals suggest that this is the case, but there are very few studies in humans," said researcher and lead study author Jorge Chavarro.

"This only the third study to look at whether soy food has a relationship with fertility in humans and the first one to find an association in agreement to the animal studies," he told AFP.

Soy contains isoflavones, an organic compound which acts like female hormones and appears to impede a man's ability to produce sperm.

"Isoflavones are structurally similar to estrogen and can mimic the action of estrogen in the body," said Chavarro.

"Soy is expected to have estrogen-like activity in many organs and tissues which can be beneficial for some things but it's certainly not beneficial for sperm production, at least that's what animal models suggest."

The Harvard study examined the soy intake of 99 men, determined to be part of couples experiencing fertility difficulties, over the course of three months.

"There was an inverse association between soy food intake and sperm concentration that remained significant after accounting for age, abstinence time, body mass index, caffeine and alcohol intake and smoking," the study said.

Those who ate the most soy had 41 million sperm per milliliter less than men who did not eat soy. An average man has between 80 million and 120 million sperm per milliliter.

The Death of The Great Actor Heath Ledger

At about 2:45 PM on January 22, 2008, Ledger was found unconscious in his fourth-floor loft apartment, at 421 Broome Street, in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. Emergency crews arrived soon after but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at 3:36 PM, and his body removed from the apartment, while crowds of onlookers began gathering outside throughout that night.

After two weeks of intense media speculation about possible causes of his death, on 6 February 2008, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York released its conclusions, based on an initial autopsy of January 23, 2008, and a subsequent complete toxicological analysis. The report concludes, in part, "Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine." It also states definitively: "We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications." The medications found in the toxicological analysis are commonly prescribed in the United States for insomnia, anxiety, depression, pain, and/or cold symptoms. The Medical Examiner's Office also announced that it would not be publicly disclosing the official estimated time of death. The official announcement of the cause of Ledger's death heightened concerns about general "abuse of prescription medications." Late in February 2008, a still-ongoing DEA investigation of medical professionals "cleared" two American medics, who practice in Los Angeles and Houston, of "any wrongdoing," determining that "the doctors in question had prescribed Ledger other medications–not the pills that killed him."

NSman who stole rifle gets more than 9 years’ jail, 18 strokes

SINGAPORE: 20—year—old national serviceman Corporal Dave Teo Ming, who stole a rifle and ammunition, has been sentenced to nine years & two months in jail and 18 strokes of the cane.

The sentence, which came 10 months after his arrest in September last year, was for three charges — illegally possessing a stolen army rifle and live bullets, and for carrying a knife in a public place without lawful purpose.

Teo was arrested at Orchard Cineleisure, after he disappeared with the rifle and eight rounds of ammunition from Mandai Hill Camp while on guard duty.

His actions sparked off one of the biggest man—hunts in Singapore.

According to the prosecution, Teo was going to use the rifle to shoot his then girlfriend Crystal, who had broken off with him.

Teo had also admitted to carrying a 40—centimetre knife on April 14 last year near Crystal’s home.

Teo’s friend, Ong Boon Jun, who did not report the NSman for possessing the rifle and bullets, had earlier been sentenced to 6—and—a—half years’ jail and six strokes of the cane. His appeal against the sentence was dismissed by the High Court in May this year.

Ong, a 22—year—old pimp, was charged with being in Teo’s company when he had the illegal items. The two of them were together at the Champagne Hotel in Geylang. — CNA/ir
