Search: Chinese actress Gong Li a Singaporean citizen

SINGAPORE, Nov 10, 2008 (AFP) - Leading Chinese actress Gong Li, who just last year served as a delegate during her homeland's annual session of parliament, has become a citizen of Singapore, an official said Monday.

"That is confirmed," the assistant to lawmaker Lee Bee Wah, who presided over the weekend citizenship ceremony, told AFP.

The Straits Times reported that the 43-year-old Gong -- star of "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Farewell My Concubine" -- collected her Singapore citizenship certificate from Lee on Saturday, along with 149 other new citizens.

In 2007, Gong was a delegate to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the nation's lower house.

The Straits Times did not say why Gong decided to become a citizen of Singapore, a majority ethnic-Chinese city-state, but said she had married local businessman Ooi Hoe Seong in 1996.
